Four Bob Books Starring Jack and Anna

I Can Ride! (Bob Books, Level 1, Scholastic Reader). Lynn Maslen Kertell. 2012. Scholastic. 32 pages.

It is a beautiful day. "We can all go on a bike ride," says Dad. Anna is a good bike rider. She pedals at the park. She goes up and down hills. Dad says, "Jack, you can go with me." "I want to ride on two wheels," says Jack. "Okay, we can try," says Dad.

I Can Ride is an early reader--level 1. (Sight words, words to sound out, and simple sentences). The family is going to the park to ride bikes, Jack decides he wants to remove his training wheels, at first he's not successful. It's scary learning how to balance and ride. It's all so new, but, he keeps trying and trying and with some family support and encouragement, Jack grows in skill and confidence. Enough that he can make that phone call to Grandma to tell her the great news: he can ride his bicycle!

My School Trip (Bob Books, Level 1, Scholastic Reader). Lynn Maslen Kertell. Illustrated by Sue Hendra. 2012. Scholastic. 32 pages.

Jack's class is going on a trip. They will take a bus to the zoo. Jack sits with Bill. The zoo is full of things to see. Jack hears the chatter of animal sounds. Bill sniffs new smells.

Jack goes to the zoo in this BOB adventure. (Anna must be in a different grade at school.) Jack and Bill, his buddy for the field trip, see the zoo together. This one is very simple and mostly boring.

Outdoor Adventures! (Bob Books, Level 1, Scholastic Reader). Lynn Maslen Kertell. Illustrated by Sue Hendra. 2012. Scholastic. 32 pages.

"Jack, Jack, Dad will take us on a hike today!" yells Anna. Anna puts on sunscreen. Jack runs to the car. Dad brings lunch and drinks. Jack and Anna sit in the car. They ride and ride. They pass the city. They drive to the country. "We are here!" says Dad. Jack and Anna start up the path.

Jack and Anna go with their Dad on a hike in the country in this Level 1 Early Reader. The two kids have so much fun on their hike that they want to go again the next day. At first they are disappointed when they're told no. But soon these two are "hiking" in their very own backyard.

The New Puppy. (Bob Books, Level 1, Scholastic Reader). Lynn Maslen Kertell. Illustrated by Sue Hendra. 2012. Scholastic. 32 pages.

Jack and Anna want a puppy. A puppy is a friend. A puppy likes to play. A puppy is a lot of work, says Mom and Dad. Puppies need to be fed, says Dad. Puppies need to go out," says Mom. "We will take care of it," the kids say.

In this adventure, Jack and Anna get the dog that they have been wanting and they name it Buddy. Owning a dog is hard work, but it is very fun!
